Classical music orchestra concert for Bethesda

A popular piece of classical music will be played in Bethesda.

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra will perform “The Planets” by Gustav Holst in an upcoming concert. “The Planets” is probably Holst’s most famous composition, and is an orchestral suite in seven movements, each named for a planet. The names of the movements, which are the names of Roman gods, indicate the opinions of the composer as to the characteristics of each planet.

The movements are:

“Mars, the Bringer of War”; “Venus, the Bringer of Peace”; “Mercury, the Winged Messenger”; “Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity”; “Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age”; “Uranus, the Magician”; and “Neptune, the Mystic.”

In Roman mythology, Mars is the god of war, Venus the goddess of love, Mercury the messenger of the gods, Jupiter the king of the gods, Saturn the god of agriculture, Uranus personifies the sky, and Neptune is the god of the sea. When events such as this are scheduled, organizers can work with brochure printing to create informative programs.

“The Planets” premiered in London in 1918, with Adrian Boult, Holst’s friend, conducting before a small, invited audience. The work had its first public performance in 1920, with Albert Coates conducting the London Symphony Orchestra. The music was innovative, and some critics were hostile, but the composition quickly became popular.

The concert is scheduled for May 18 at 8.00 pm at the Music Center at Strathmore.
