Classic play near Bethesda

One of the plays of a Pulitzer Prize-winning author will be performed near Bethesda.

Maxwell Anderson's play “The Bad Seed” is based on the book of the same name by William March. The play is a psychological thriller, with the basic subject matter of the work being whether someone can be born bad.

The play centers on Rhoda Penmark, the eight-year-old daughter of Christine and Kenneth Penmark. Christine's life seems ideal—she has a beautiful house, a loving husband, and a daughter who seems to be perfect. The girl is polite, especially to adults, talented, and a good student. However, when one of Rhoda's classmates, Claude Daigle, drowns on a school outing, speculation arises about his death. When Christine finds a medal Claude won in Rhoda's bedroom, she finds herself wondering if her daughter might have done something unspeakable. As the play progresses, it reveals that Christine has a secret that gives her a reason to fear Rhoda's actions.

The play first opened on Broadway in 1954, and ran for 334 performances. A review at the time said that anyone who had been terrified by the novel was likely to have the same reaction to the play.

“The Bad Seed” will be performed January 29 and 30, at 8:00 pm both days. The venue is the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre on Edmonston Drive in Rockville, a short drive from Bethesda. Brochure printing can create informative programs for events like this.
