What's Happening in Bethesda, MD…

Best-selling author and humorist to visit Bethesda

A New York Times bestselling writer, humorist and essayist is coming to Bethesda.

David Sedaris is a native of Johnson City, New York, grew up and went to high school in Raleigh, and attended college there for a short time before relocating to Chicago. He graduated from the famous School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1987.

He also got his break in Chicago when Ira Glass, a radio host, heard Sedaris reading from his diary. Glass asked Sedaris to guest on “The Wild Room,” a weekly radio show in Chicago. That led to an appearance on National Public Radio in 1992, when he read his essay “Santaland Diaries,” which described his experienced working as a Macy’s elf. From there, he appeared monthly on NPR, and signed a deal with Little Brown and Company for two books.

Sedaris is known for his skill as an essayist, and for his comedy. He first published a collection of essays, “Barrel Fever: Stories and Essays,” in 1994, and his latest, “Happy-Go-Lucky,” appeared in 2022.

His humor is often self-deprecating, drawing on memories of his childhood, heritage, education, and his experiences living in England, New York, and France. Sedaris was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2019.

Davis Sedaris will be at the Music Center at Strathmore on Saturday, April 13 at 8.00pm. When artists like this are scheduled to perform, concert organizers often work with services that offer brochure printing to create programs.
