Two environmental groups have teamed up to restore a reef and add oysters to the Severn River in Annapolis. The groups are the Severn River Association and Oyster Recovery Partnership. They plan to purchase and raise 10 million baby oysters.
Funds raised for this project will go to protect a reef between the Naval Academy and Severn River bridges. Bob Whitecomb, Severn River Association, chairman says that they have a large group of volunteers from the Marylanders Grow Oysters.
Participants can purchase a bushel of oyster that will be placed among the 40 billion in the river. These are available to purchase until July 30, and planting will be complete during July.
Each bushel contains about 2,600 oysters. The oysters planted would be able to filter about 2.5 billion gallons of water when they reach maturity.
The Severn River Association has been planting oysters for a long time at the river, which gained oyster sanctuary status in 2009. It plants young oysters on docks to protect them while they grow.
After they grow one year they are taken to the Severn River. This local group produces about 750,000 oysters ever year to help with environmental purposes.
Annapolis has a Print shop that helps associations, government agencies, nonprofit groups, retail shops, schools, and businesses with graphic design of printed materials for fundraising.
