Annapolis Fire Department calls attention to Fire Prevention Week

Fire Prevention Week will take place from October 7-13, as the Annapolis Fire Department works alongside the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to spread awareness about ways people can prevent house fires.

While everyone may have heard of the catchphrase “Where there’s smoke, there’s fire”, they may not know how to escape safely in the event of an actual fire. This is why the Annapolis Fire Department will be hosting events at the Eastport Fire Station to educate the public about common fire hazards and what to do in case the smoke alarm goes off. This team of volunteers will be holding demonstrations with Sparky the Fire Dog, doing a canned food drive, and also teaching people to practice hands-on CPR or AED.

Fire Chief, David Stokes, has stated that people must “Look. Listen. Learn.” when taking action to get away from a fire. This includes locating the emergency exits or choosing a place to meet after everyone has evacuated from the building. According to the NFPA, the number of home fires has been declining, which suggests that people are handling their electrical appliances more carefully than before.

It can be a good idea to hand out pamphlets with Letterheads on them to attendees in public programs like those held during Fire Prevention Week, since these tell people who to contact if they have any questions.
