An emergency at sea presents challenges that may make it different to one on dry land, and an Annapolis seminar will ensure those who take to the water know what to do should a crisis arise.
A local company that offers classes centered on emergency medicine for campers, hikers, and others who spend time in the wilderness will be running its Marine Medicine: Offshore Emergency Medicine short course. It may be helpful to racing sailors, cruisers and others who spend time at sea.
The learning will begin even before the students arrive, as there will be pre-course reading assignments and testing. This will be followed by three days of in-person training. Everyone who registers will need to have completed a CPR course.
The activity is Coast Guard approved under CFR 46, and is being offered as part of the larger Spring Sailboat Show. The text to be utilized by the students will be “Wilderness and Rescue Medicine 8th Edition.” Training manuals and other bound learning materials can be prepared by Stationery printers.
Those who would like to ensure they know what to do during a marine emergency are welcome to register for this course, which will begin on April 28. Further details for anyone who feels it could be a good fit for them can be found online, and its location will be provided at a later date.
