Middlesex County robotics team rewarded for hard work
At the New England District event of the FIRST Robotics Competition, held on March 8 in Reading, a First Lego League team based in Middlesex County was awarded the Rookie All Star Award.
With the event taking place a short distance from Malden, the Stormgears designed a robot nicknamed ‘Rabbott’. Leading up to the competition, the team worked long hours, and it was able to showcase a scrapbook, photos, banners, and handouts, perhaps using a local print company for assistance.
The theme for this year’s competition was ‘Recycle Rush’. In the competition, two teams, each with three robots, played a game involving stacking totes on scoring platforms. The stacks were to be covered with recycling containers and litter was to be disposed of properly. The game pieces were to be recyclable or reusable items from teams’ home locations.
FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a nonprofit organization designed to get students involved in science, technology, and problem solving projects. It shows them that these areas can be fun and rewarding, as well as lead to successful careers.
The Stormgears included 29 students from schools in the County, four coaches, nine mentors, and 14 sponsors. The team raised $30,000 in sponsorships and grants by getting involved in community outreach events to more than 500 people and 124 local businesses.
