Malden park gets facelift

The extensive renovations of Miller Park in Malden were recently celebrated with a rededication ceremony.

The Capital Improvement Program of the City funded the $340,000 price tag for the renovations and it was administered by the Malden Redevelopment Authority.

The park had become dilapidated, but is a space for people of all ages in the neighborhood. There are picnic tables, a loop walk with a seat wall, benches, and an open lawn area surrounding an open area and new playground.

In addition, seal coating and new stripes were done on the basketball court and along the walkways lighting was installed for pedestrians to offer increased security and illumination.

In 1970, the park was named for Robert D. Miller, who was actively involved with Malden’s youth.

He grew up in Medford and graduated from Medford High School. He then entered the United States Air Force and, after his service, he worked with Cerebral Palsy patients and underprivileged children. The Malden YMCA hired Miller in 1965 and he played a key role in many of its programs. After his untimely death in 1967, what was formerly known as Harvard Park became Miller Park to celebrate his legacy in the neighborhood..

The City may be turning to a banner printing company to create banners to spread the word around the community about the newly renovated park
