What's Happening in Malden, MA…

Bike sharing program comes to Malden

Funding from the federal government and three new sharing stations for bicycles in Malden will provide an opportunity for residents to have access to a limited number of free 30-day Bluebike memberships.

The three new bike sharing stations are on Holden Street at Malden High School, on the Northern Strand Bike Path at Main Street, and on Exchange Street at Commercial Street. Passes are handed out on a first come, first served basis by registering online for them. These passes are good for an unlimited number of trips lasting 45 minutes over a period of 30 days. There is an additional charge of $2.50 for each increment of 30 minutes beyond an initial free rental of 45 minutes. More details about how to sign up for such programs and charges can be provided with flyer printing services.

There are already over 400 Bluebike stations in Boston and the surrounding communities. Mayor Gary Christenson of Malden has promoted the program, saying these new stations in Malden will increase the opportunity for residents to bike as an environmentally friendly and healthy mode of transportation. Christenson added that this program provides an alternative commuting option to driving or relying on public transport.

Christenson said that if the program proves to be successful, it will mean more stations can be added throughout the city.
