A new food pantry was recently opened in Lowell by the Dharma Center of America (DCA), which held a special inauguration ceremony for the event. It was attended by the director of Merrimack Valley Food Bank, Amy Pessia, and other individuals from the government, businesses, and academia.
The Hon. Mayor Edward Kennedy presided over lighting a traditional lamp, while Pessia and City Councilor Rita Mercier welcomed the DCA to the city of Lowell and commented about partnering with the DCA to help those in the city who need assistance and support with their basic needs for food.
President of the DCA, Suresh K. Jain, said that the organization is glad to have the opportunity to help the city with the basic needs. Starting this Saturday, February 4, it will also be offering free yoga classes and will soon be adding free individualized tutoring and help with homework.
The Mayor added that in addition to providing food, the yoga classes will help to promote a healthy lifestyle. Also, the Lowell Public Schools need supplemental support with regard to homework help and tutoring services, and he is glad to see this partnership.
