UMass Lowell team takes silver in national competition

A national engineering competition was recently held, where a team of students from UMass Lowell were the second place winners in the design and testing of a wind-energy system that offered real-world applications.

The team, comprising both business and engineering majors, called themselves ‘Team WindHawk’ and had made a proposal which was submitted to the 2016 United States Department of Energy Collegiate Wind Competition.

After reviewing the proposal, the team received $19,961 from the department so they could further develop their idea for the contest. To aid the project further, another $13,594 was awarded to the students by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center.

The students were asked to create a wind-energy system so that users who did not live on the grid could be supplied with energy. A plan for the business needed to be put together, and a site where the product could be developed needed to be selected before they could build a scale replica of it to demonstrate its viability

UMass Lowell faculty and researchers involved in the WindSTAR Industry/University Cooperative Research Center and the Center for Wind Energy, as well as researchers from the Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center, provided guidance for the students.

The students may have used a poster printing company to present both the technical aspects of the project and the business plan to the judges at the competition.
