UMass Lowell grows with addition of new buildings

Two new buildings will be opened at UMass Lowell this week.

The first building to be unveiled is the Lawrence Lin MakerSpace, a new makerspace in the College of Engineering that measures 8,500 square feet in size. There will be laser cutters, three-dimensional printers, and other equipment in an open-concept work area that will enable students to bring their ideas from design to reality.

Funding for the space came from Lawrence Lin, who earned his Ph.D. in plastics engineering at UMass Lowell, and his wife, Jangli Chang, who is also graduated from the university. Additional support was provided by Haas Auditorium and Analog Devices.

The second building is the Pulichino Tong Business Center, part of the Manning School of Business. It will offer a live stock market ticker surrounding the lobby area, faculty offices, meeting space, and a state-of-the-art, real-time trading room. The building is 54,800 square feet in area.

The center will also be the home to the Wilson Center for Entrepreneurship, the new Donahue Center for Business Ethics and Social Responsibility, and three other named spaces.

There will be a dedication ceremony for the Lawrence Lin MakerSpace today, April 19 at 4:00 pm. For the Pulichino Tong Business Center, the dedication will be on Thursday, April 20 at 11:00 am.

UMass Lowell might consider the use of Banners at each building to make the community aware of these new buildings and their facilities.
