School superintendent to retire

One of Lowell's educational leaders recently announced his plans to retire, according to an article in the Lowell Sun.

Joseph Mastrocola, Greater Lowell Technical High School's superintendent, has been in education for more than 32 years, and has decided now is the time for him to retire. He said his decision will give him more time to spend with his family. Corporate Gifts are often given in situations like this, to honor an employee at their retirement.

Mastrocola has a good relationship with the School Committee, which praised his fiscal management. Curtis LeMay, the committee chair, said the district was in good shape, thanks to Mastrocola's efforts.

For his part, Mastrocola noted that in addition to making the district fiscally stable, its services and enrollment have both increased during his time in Lowell. He added that his relationship with the committee has been “incredible,” and he praised both the students and staff, saying the Lowell district is “one of the best” he has ever worked for.

During the last 30 years, Mastrocola has been a teacher and administrator, and came to Lowell from Groton-Dunstable where he was a superintendent. Before that, he was at Peabody as an assistant superintendent. He came to Lowell with a two-year contract, which would have expired in August, but the board approved an extension of several months, until his retirement date of January 1, 2020.
