Salvation Army raises funds in the Merrimack Valley

The Salvation Army of Greater Lowell recently announced that they had succeeded their fundraising goal during their annual radiothon.

Originally set at $150,000, the Salvation Army had already received donations worth $191,431 and was still counting the money coming in. The Salvation Army may have benefitted from the use of Flyers to promote the radiothon prior to its airing, accounting for its great success.

Many people made donations to honor Fred Simons, who has been the driving force of the radiothon for many years and is now is battling a serious illness as he approaches his 80th birthday.

Former owner of the Lowell Spinners, Drew Weber, pledged a donation of $80 for every player in the Spinners that had moved up to play for the Red Sox. Several car dealerships in the local area also pledged $80 for each car that was sold during the campaign.

Host of Saturday Morning Live on WCAP 980, which holds the radiothon, Warren Shaw, said that many people did the right thing in making their donations and Fred was a good excuse for doing so. Simon called into the show and added that he was proud of the team that has worked to put together the radiothon over the years as it really is an army of people.

Proceeds from the radiothon will go towards helping those families who are needy during the winter months.
