A Public Humanities Center will be established on the Lowell campus of Middlesex Community College as a result of a grant of $16,000 from the National Endowment for the Humanities and Mass Humanities.
Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences of the college, Matthew Olson, said that the center will foster relationships in the community, develop outreach programs, and create new ways that will be able to explore the many cultures in the Lowell area. The center is scheduled to open in June 2017.
Olson added that there is a great deal of culture and history in the city, due its diversity, the lively arts scene, and the many partnerships between community-based organizations and the college. This makes the city an ideal location for the new Public Humanities Center, where students and faculty will be able to come together with the community to stimulate the creative energies in the city.
The director of the center will be David Kalivas, history professor at Middlesex Community College. He said that a central theme of the center will be immigration. Cultural programs will be developed in partnership with community and educational leaders so that residents will be able to learn more about the roots of their ancestors.
