What's Happening in Lowell, MA…

A new hotel has been proposed for the Hamilton Canal Innovation District in Lowell. The hotel would be a 120-room, six-story Hilton, and the proposal was put before a recent meeting of the Economic Development Subcommittee of the Lowell City Council.

The district comprises 17 parcels in the city's heart, and when finished, will double the size of the downtown, giving it a new gateway. The development will connect the Arts District, various event venues, and the downtown core with the Lowell Connector and Gallagher Terminal. The hotel would be part of the Lowell Justice Center, which is also a part of the Hamilton Canal renovation.

The presentation was made by John DeAngelis, a developer who has experience renovating historic buildings in downtown Lowell, as well as a Hilton representative. Recently, DeAngelis has been at work on the American Textile History Museum, which is across from the Hamilton Canal Innovation District.

As he worked on the museum, DeAngelis became intrigued by the work going on in the district, and put together a proposal with Hilton, taking representatives of the hotel chain through the Innovation District. The Hilton representatives became excited by the prospect of opening a hotel in the area, noting construction would take more than a year.
