One of basketball's most skilled, and funniest, teams is on the way to Lowell.
The legendary Harlem Globetrotters will bring their special magic to Massachusetts, in an exhibition game to be played at the Tsongas Center in Lowell. They are an exhibition team, combining comedy, theater, and athletic talent in the more than 400 events annually. However, they are also real athletes, and in 1940, the team won the World Professional Basketball Tournament, beating the Chicago Bruins.
The Globetrotters were founded by Abe Saperstein in 1926, and played their first game the following January, in Hinckley, Illinois. Since then, they have entertained fans in over 120 countries around the world, introducing basketball to millions. They have popularized now-common moves such as the fast break and the slam dunk. Several players who started with the Globetrotters subsequently moved to the NBA, including Nathaniel “Sweetwater” Clifton, who was the first African-American player in the league; and the legendary Wilt Chamberlain.
The Globetrotters play against the Generals, and although the games are full of tricks and fun, the contests are real. A review of a Globetrotters' game calls them “amazing” and “family-friendly.”
The “contest” will take place February 19, at 7:00 pm, and chances are the Globetrotters will win the match. Brochure printing can be used to create programs for this type of event.
