Recently, Project LEARN hosted the Kids Summer BookFest at Eastern Bank in downtown Lowell.
This is the second year for the event, and over 600 helpers, volunteers, and families attended, celebrating the bank's BookNook and the pleasure of reading. One of the highlights of the day was having community leaders read Books to the children.
The event was launched by L.Z. Nunn, the executive director of Project LEARN, and the branch manager/vice president of Eastern Bank, Thomas ‘Doc’ Daugherty, who shot confetti from cannons to start things off with a blast. Readers who gathered at the BookNook included Marian Ryan, the District Attorney of Middlesex County; Lowell Community Health Center's CEO, Susan Levine; and Kenneth Lavallee, a former superintendent with the police.
In addition to the reading, there was music, balloons, face painting, ice cream and candy, popcorn, and food of all kinds. The fire and police departments were also on hand to give safety demonstrations, and the entire event was open to members of the public free of charge.
Project LEARN (the Lowell Education Alliance Resource Network) was founded by the city's business community in 2013, and partners with schools, businesses, and the community to raise funds to support education so the children gain the skills they need to succeed.
Organizers of fun events like this could work with a banner printing company to create a festive banner to welcome children and decorate the venue.
