Lowell ramps up food science with tastings

The Lowell Culinary Collaborative will host the “Are You a Supertaster? The Science of Sensory Analysis: Cheese Edition” for foodies wanting to delve into the science of their favorite dairy product.

The Lowell Culinary Collaborative was created by two local food businesses, Mill City Cheesemongers and Sweet Lydia’s, as a collaborative effort to support women and women-identified food professionals. The collaborative is a place where people can go to not only buy artisan-crafted food but also participate in tastings and food-related workshops.

January’s workshop will delve into the science of what makes cheese taste and smell the way it does. The class will focus on the basic science of how we experience food with our senses, as well as participate in hands-on experiments and tastings to learn about the sensory qualities of cheese.

Attendees will learn how to differentiate between cheeses and how to describe flavors and aromas more aptly. Participants will keep a tasting journal and will leave the workshop with a selection of their favorite cheeses.

Hands-on workshops often utilize printed training materials created by businesses specializing in brochure printing services to instruct students.

The Science of Sensory Analysis: Cheese Edition class is scheduled for January 20 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. It will take place at the Western Avenue Studios #307 on 122 Western Avenue. Workshop registration is $75.
