What's Happening in Lowell, MA…

A four-year contract for Superintendent Salah Khelfaoui was recently approved by the School Committee of Lowell.

Mayor Edward Kennedy and Khelfaoui collaborated in the negotiations and it is hoped that this negotiation will bring stability to the leadership of the district. Khelfaoui was appointed in 2015 to take control of the Lowell Public Schools and was the third superintendent in seven years. His salary was stipulated along with a monthly travel allowance, but he had not been awarded a contract for a specific number of years.

Bob Hoey, a member of the School Committee, commented that it is important that a school system as large as Lowell’s should have a superintendent with a contract.

Another Committee member, Steve Gendron, added that this contract brings a stability to the school system that is long-overdue and very much needed. The Committee’s last evaluation of Khelfaoui gave him high marks and felt he was doing a good job so they would not have awarded this contract without such an evaluation.

Overall, the Committee has been pleased with the performance of the superintendent. Dropout rates and chronic absenteeism have fallen, standardized test scores have improved, and a more diverse staff has been hired in the district under his guidance.

The School Committee might consider using a Print company to put together a mailer that can be sent to residents of the city informing them of this contract.
