It was a happy day in Lowell recently, when four members of the police department were promoted, including Marisol Nobrega, who is now the first Latina lieutenant in the department’s history.
In addition to Nobrega’s promotion, Lieutenant Mathew Penrose was promoted to captain, Christopher Purtell was promoted from patrol officer to sergeant, and Captain Barry Golner was promoted to deputy police superintendent.
As he introduced Nobrega, Police Superintendent Raymond ‘Kelly’ Richardson discussed her accomplishments during her 20-year history with the department. Richardson said he was extremely proud of Nobrega, and that he feels it is important that all officers have a chance to succeed within the department.
He called Lowell a diverse city that will benefit from having Hispanic officers and Asian officers, and that promoting Nobrega to lieutenant may encourage others to try for promotion. When promotions like this are made, officials might consider having new Business Cards printed with the appropriate designations, and presenting them to those concerned.
Nobrega’s promotion took place during Hispanic Heritage Month, which made the honor particularly fitting. Her family was there to celebrate the event, and her son Justin, who is a patrol officer with the Lowell Police Department, pinned her new badge on Lieutenant Nobrega’s uniform as part of the ceremony.
Nobrega has lived in Lowell all her life, and is happy to continue serving the city.
