What's Happening in Lowell, MA…

Lowell boasts almost six miles of canals that were originally constructed to generate power. Now, a city official wants to consider if they could be used for an entirely different activity—kayaking.

Karen Cirillo, a city councilor, recently submitted a motion requesting that the city examine the possibility of allowing people to kayak on Lowell's canals during summer weekends. She noted that the purpose of introducing the motion is to start a conversation about the project, adding that the waterways are a beautiful asset to the community, and should be used.

Cirillo contacted Zoar Outdoor, which said it would be interested in operating a canal kayaking program. Zoar currently handles whitewater rafting outings on the Concord River. Brochure printing can be used to illustrate the fun of activities like this.

Bob Gagnon, a Lowell resident, said he supports the idea, but would like to see the program start small, probably with guides, increasing as time goes on. He said he could picture thousands of kayakers taking advantage of beautiful days in the fall, spring, or summer to paddle downtown. They would also probably visit the city's stores and restaurants, much like people do when they attend the city's folk festival. He added that if the program starts small, few changes would be needed, but if it grows, the infrastructure will probably need repair. He believes the program would cover any necessary costs.
