The ground was officially broken in January on the expansion of the The Boyden Library, scheduled to be completed in mid-2013.
"This is your library. This is for you," said Jeff Lovely, library trustee chairman.
Foxboro residents attended the chilly ceremony in the parking lot, now fenced in to protect citizens during construction, and watched as town officials took to the ground with shovels. Because of milder winter temperatures, the soil was actually able to be turned over. Members from TLT Contractors were on hand, as well as LLB Architects and STV Project Managers.
"This project symbolizes the strength of the Foxboro community,"
Said George Comeau of the state Board of Library Commissioners. The board provided a $3.4 million grant to assist in the funding of the $12 million renovation project.
During the ceremony, Lovely acknowledged library director Jerry Cirillo, children’s services director Margi Rossetti and the Friends of the Boyden Library who have been planning and seeking funding to expand Foxboro’s 45-year-old library. He singled out the work of Janet Pineault, a long standing member of the board of trustees, who has dedicated hundreds of hours planning and seeking funding to expand the library.
“It’s a great example of a partnership between the community and the state,” said to State Representative, Jay Barrows.
During the 18-month construction period, the contents of the library will be housed at Chestnut Green, located in Foxboro on Payson Road. Local Print companies could take full advantage of the disruption to library card holders with postcard and flyer printing, communicating news of the temporary address and construction progress.
The original Boyden Library, which was designed in 1967 by Kilham Hopkins Greeley and Brodie, was completed and opened to Foxboro residents on Nov.2.
