The Foxboro post office was recently inundated with cards, letters and packages for Danny Nickerson, who turned six on July 25.
The youngster, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor last year, was asked by his mother, Carley Nickerson, what he wanted for his birthday. He replied he just wanted cards with his name on them as he loves to get real mail.
Carley reacted by using the printing services of the Attleboro Sun-Chronicle to write an article, which was put on the front page. From there, it went throughout the web, bringing in an initial load of 2,000 letters and then 10,000 more last Wednesday. The letters came from California and Alaska and from as far away as Kuwait, Switzerland, Austria, and Australia.
According to Barbara Haynes, supervisor of the post office, it was a happy and exhausting labor of love. His family of mother, father, and grandparents required a U-Haul truck and an SUV to carry out all the letters and packages.
Speaking to NECN.com, Carley commented that this has also helped her to get through the everyday life of stress, struggles and treatments and been a great distraction to have this mail and to share with Danny in the experience.
Danny’s father, Daniel Jamieson, commented that the outpouring of care from around the world was beyond anything he had anticipated.
