Sports group to build hockey facilities in Devens and Worcester

Marathon Sports Group President Harry Angevine recently announced plans to build a hockey facility in Worcester and is negotiating to build one just slightly to the north in Devens.

The Worcester Business Development Corporation is currently negotiating to purchase the site of the former PresMet Corporation, after which time it would demolish the metal parts manufacturing plant, clean it up, and then lease it to Marathon Sports Group. Angevine said the cost for construction would be between $12m and $15m and the project would be completed by August 2017.

According to Angevine, this facility would provide much needed ice time to the community and rejuvenate the neighborhood by bringing in more foot traffic. Craig Blais, president and chief executive of the Worcester Business Development Corporation, added that several youth hockey leagues and local colleges have already expressed interest in using the proposed facility.

Michael Mudd, Athletic Director of Worcester State University, said the college would rent time for practices and games for its men’s hockey team and then would consider starting one for women.

With so much interest in ice rinks and hockey in the Central Massachusetts area, Marathon Sports Group might like to work with brochure printers to create a booklet for mailing to residents in the Worcester and Devens areas, informing them of their proposed projects.
