Rotary helps fund middle school music programs

The music programs at Samoset and Sky View Middle Schools recently received an award of $2,000 each from the Leominster Rotary Club, which provides humanitarian services to organizations, businesses, and other endeavors in the Devens area.

The club hosted a wine-pairing fundraiser for the music programs of the two schools. The event was a five-course meal accompanied by wines that complemented each course. This was the seventh year that the club has hosted this event, and it most likely turned to a local print company to create flyers and other materials promoting it throughout the community.

Tim Blake, Principal of the Sky View Middle School, thanked the Rotary for everything it does to support the activities of the teachers, as the school is grateful to have them in the buildings and in the district.

According to Claire Freda, president of the Rotary, there had not been a way for the schools to raise funds before, and so the event started out small.

Music instructor and bandleader at Samoset, Bob Landry, said funds in the past from the Rotary have been used to purchase instruments. The funds from this year will go towards a new keyboard for his classroom and busing costs.

Brenda-Anne LeMay, music teacher at Sky View, said the funds will cover the recent participation by the school in the Great East Music Festival.
