What's Happening in Devens, MA…

Pink flamingos to be celebrated in Leominster

The annual Pink Flamingo Day event will be taking place in Leominster later this month in Monument Square. Residents of Devens might want to attend this unique activity.

Dean Mazzaralla, the mayor of Leominster, created National Pink Flamingo Day in 2007 to honor the creator of the plastic lawn flamingo, Don Featherstone. Featherstone, an American artist, created the plastic pink flamingo in 1957 while he was working for Union Products, based in Leominster.

As part of the celebrations, the Department of Public Works (DPW) has added 40 paintings of the flamingos to crosswalks in downtown Leominster and the Leominster Public Library has displays of the bird in its windows that face downtown. Such events can also be promoted throughout a city and neighboring communities with poster printing.

There will be a fashion show at the event at which there will be a pink flamingo trophy awarded to the best attire. There will also flamingo themed sensory bins offered by Creating Chaos for purchase. Flamingo glitter tattoos and other designs will be offered by the glitter glam team of Wicked Good Henna. There will also be a pink flamingo coloring and painting craft station hosted by Pack 16 Leominster Cub Scouts. Pink lemonade and activities for kids will be held by Texas Roadhouse.

Pink Flamingo Day will take place from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday June 23.
