Medical device manufacturer expands in Devens
SMC Ltd., a contract manufacturer of medical devices headquartered in Wisconsin, is planning to expand its facilities in Devens.
The company is investing $41.2 million in a facility that will span 207,000 square feet and will be used for manufacturing and warehousing. The Massachusetts Economic Assistance Coordinating Council expects that this new facility will create 100 new jobs. Many such jobs are often advertised throughout an area with poster printing.
The company has a tax break of just over $790,000 on the project. This will be in the form of a reduction in property taxes, which will enable the company to retain an additional 400 jobs. SMC already has a facility in Devens on Independence Drive. This expansion will be the largest such investment in the history of the company.
SMC focuses its products for the healthcare market and has been in the industry for 30 years providing the needed expert knowledge for medical devices. As a contract manufacturer, the company is able to provide devices for single patient and single use devices across a range of needs in volume. During the pandemic, the company was able to change its manufacturing operations to components for respirators, diagnostic test kits, face shields, and components for vaccine delivery.
The funding was made possible by the Economic Development Incentive Program which awarded funds to seven other projects.
