A development site of 12 acres has been purchased by Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) next to its manufacturing and development facility in Devens so that it can have space for potential expansion in the future. The land was purchased from MassDevelopment for just under $1.5 million.
Kristen Cullen, Head of Public Affairs for CFS, said that the company has purchased property on Hospital Road which gives the company the option to expand its campus. She added that no plans have been finalized at this time.
Banner printing can be used at such sites to inform the community of such purchases and their plans for the future.
However, the company is obligated to build on the site before August 10, 2030, as per the agreement with MassDevelopment. After that time, if CFS does not build on the site, then MassDevelopment has the option to repurchase the property.
CFS opened its campus of 50 acres in February; it purchased this property also from MassDevelopment in 2021 for $5.6 million. It is planning to release in 2025 its SPARC tokamak, which uses a reaction of fusion and is a magnetic device, and to be able to feed fusion power to the grid early in the next decade.
CFS was founded in 2018 and originated at MIT. The company combines the speed and agility of the private sector with many years of fusion research.
