Devens is now being considered as a facility for testing detection devices and self-driving cars.
According to Communications Director at MassDevelopment, Kelsey Abbruzzese, the idea has been on the back burner but is now coming to the forefront due the conversation across the country about self-driving vehicles. Abbruzzese said that there is now discussion to see if the area is feasible for such testing.
Abbruzzese added that there are many amenities in Devens that make it suitable as a driving grounds, such as its varied landscape and location. However, the most important benefit is the numerous companies in the area and their many technological innovations.
No specific names of businesses have been disclosed by MassDevelopment but there are academic institutions and entrepreneurs that have expressed interest as well.
Those parties interested in Devens would need to rent the area and obtain a license agreement with MassDevelopment to be able to use the testing grounds.
The assistant secretary for technology, innovation and entrepreneurship for the Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development in Massachusetts, Katie Stebbins, said this would be a good opportunity for the Commonwealth, as it is now heavily involved in the robotics industry.
