Farm in Devens plans growth

Little Leaf Farms, a company that grows baby green lettuce in its greenhouses in Devens, is planning to expand later this spring.

It will double its growing capacity in Devens and break ground on a greenhouse spanning 20 acres in Eastern Pennsylvania. This will be followed by another greenhouse of the same size in Western North Carolina, which will be used to extend is distribution capabilities. Each acre in its greenhouses yields 25 times more lettuce than that which is grown on an outdoor farm. Business card printing may be needed for people who will be working in various capacities at such facilities.

Owner of Little Leaf Farms, Paul Sellew, said that the company is changing the process for growing food in New England and what consumers expect for fresh produce in this area. As the company’s produce is delivered within 24 hours all year round to every major supermarket chain in New England, the company has developed a following for its lettuce. Sellow said that this expansion is an excellent opportunity to offer its produce in new markets and provide a more nutritious and fresher lettuce than what is currently available.

The new greenhouse in Devens is expected to be open in May 2020. Bank of America will be providing the financing with $18m initially and then $20m to help finance the growth of the company.
