The Community Café in St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Leominster, just a short distance from Devens, recently opened its doors to provide an evening meal on Tuesday nights for those living in local area hotels.
The Café is a combined effort of the Boys and Girls Club of Fitchburg and Leominster, the Leominster school system, and the church.
The 80 volunteers who staff the Café serve between 70 and 120 people each week, with the majority of the guests being children. The food itself comes from the parishioners of St. Mark’s, as well as donations and grants. Sometimes local businesses supply the food and volunteer to serve it. Panera Bread often provides the bread, and restaurants such as Il Camino and Il Forno in Fitchburg have provided entire meals.
According to Brenda Cole-Milner, Chairperson of the Community Café, the support from the community has been very strong. People have also donated toiletries, clothing, and other items that people need in their daily lives.
In addition to word of mouth, the Café may consider using local Print companies to help print Flyers and mailers that can be sent out to the community, making them aware of the efforts.
