Devens to celebrate centennial

The centennial of the founding of Camp Devens (later Fort Devens), marking the formation of the 18th Army Band once the United States entered World War I, will be celebrated by the Fort Devens Museum later this week.

On the first day of the two-day celebration, at 1:00 pm, former members of the 18th Army Band will reminisce about their experiences during the years they were stationed at the Camp. The talk will take place at Fort Devens Museum, which will be open from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm that day.

That evening, a dinner dance will be celebrated at the Bull Run Restaurant. There will be hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar, with a buffet dinner and dessert. A seven-piece dance band comprised of former and retired members of the 18th Army Band will play period music to which people can dance or just sit back, relax, and listen.

The festivities will conclude the next day with a band concert of patriotic music typical of the many public concerts that members of the 18th Army Band played during their 45-year stay.

The centennial celebrations will be taking place this Saturday, July 15 and Sunday, July 16. Poster printing companies can be hired to create items that can be displayed throughout the area promoting the event and encouraging people to attend.
