The Devens Interoperability Playground is planning to set up a facility where in-depth, real-world testing can be used for bringing robotics-driven devices to the market.
According to executive vice president of Devens Interoperability Playground, Richard Kelley, the types of robotic devices that will be the focus of the facility are agricultural equipment, public safety, and driverless cars, as these are the closest to being ready to test in the field.
The lab will be working with MassRobotics and the NERVE Center at UMass Lowell (two organizations involved in the robotics industry), as well as the National Institute of Standards and Technology, which is a government standards group. The lab will also be working with the local community to test these robots in the more rural environment, and the community in return will be the first to be able to implement these robots in fire and police safety.
Kelley added that the lab will provide benefits for startups given the range of support organizations involved and the proximity of Devens to Cambridge, where much of the research and development takes place.
The kickoff for the lab is June 16 and 17, 2015 with a local trade event for the robotics industry.
