Mass Development and the Devens Enterprise Commission are inviting artists from the state to apply for a grant of $15,000 to create a temporary installation of public art.
This art installation will be at Willard Field at the intersection of the paths west of Sherman Avenue. The location spans about 2,000 square feet and is near a playground, active recreation fields, a former roadway that is now open to the public for non-vehicular uses, and a sledding hill.
The goals of the project are to attract visitors to notice an underutilized space in town and reflect on the community and cultural identity of Devens, support local artists, and engage with the space and the piece.
Plans for the artwork include a mural painted on the paved surface, with an interactive element so that viewers can connect with the mural. Additional furnishings such as planters, tables, and benches are set to provide a sense of place and complement the mural. The artist or team of artists who are awarded the grant will conduct at least one session of community engagement and interviews with interest groups related to the arts to inform their work.
