The first settlers of European descent came to the area that would become Burlington in 1641; the town was incorporated in 1799. Several original buildings from the early years survive, including the Francis Wyman house, which dates from 1666. Although agricultural for much of its history, Burlington grew rapidly when Route 128 came through, making it easy to move goods to Boston, and transforming the economy into an industrial one.
