Red Cross blood drive headed to Burlington

The American Red Cross recently announced it is experiencing a critical shortage of blood, specifically type O, and is asking people to donate.

Type O negative is a ‘universal’ type and can be given to any patient, even without knowing their blood type. Type O positive is the one that is particularly needed, because it is the type most often used in transfusions, and Rh-positive patients can accept it, no matter what their blood type is.

The Red Cross at present is down to less than three days' worth of blood. To combat the shortage and to celebrate the final season of ‘Game of Thrones’, the Red Cross has partnered with HBO to ask fans of the show to Bleed #ForTheThrone. This is the largest blood drive made by an entertainment company in the history of the Red Cross, and the effort is coordinated over six days, in 43 states. Organizers can distribute promotional Pens so donors have information about the Red Cross handy.

In Burlington, donors will be able to give blood at two locations – the American Legion on Winn Street, and Lahey Clinic on Mall Road. Days and times to donate at the Legion are March 12, from 1:00pm until 7:00pm; March 19, from 1:00pm until 7:00pm; and March 26, from 1:00pm until 7:00pm. Lahey Clinic hours and times are March 16, from 8:00am until 1:00pm; and March 29, from 2:00pm until 7:00pm.
