The Planning Board recently approved a site plan waiver for the George J. Kostas Research Institute for Homeland Security of Northeastern University located in Burlington.
Northeastern plans to construct an exterior net, 150 feet by 200 feet, on the outside of the building so as to connect it to another building that is part of research institute and teaching program. The net will be made of nylon and fiber materials and will be no higher than 60 feet.
This is the first phase of an initiative, with the second phase being the construction of a building connected to the net that will form part of the campus.
The netting process will enable the university to house control rooms in an existing facility from which drones will come out of a tunnel and into the netting so that they can accumulate data. This type of research is conducted at other universities and military bases throughout the country.
Officials from the Planning Board were excited about the work Northeastern plans to do at the facility and its activity in the community, believing the project to be a reasonable proposal.
Universities such as Northeastern might benefit from the assistance of a local printing company or graphic design agency to promote the important work they are carrying out via Posters and Banners.
