Burlington police welcome new canine member

A new working dog named Zuko has joined the Burlington Police Department. Zuko is a purebred chocolate Labrador and is eight weeks old.

News of such additions to a municipal department and their benefits are often made known throughout a community with flyer printing.

Chief Thomas Browne expressed his thrill in having Zuko in the department. Browne said that in the short time he has been with the department, he has brough much joy to the community and the department is looking forward to watching him grow in his role as a search and rescue dog. He will be working with Officer Aurice Miedico, who will be his handler, housing him, taking him to his training, and visiting throughout the community.

Browne added that Zuko will be valuable to the Burlington community as once he completes his training, he will be able to assist in emotional and comfort support for members of the community, help with recuse situation, and much more.

The students of Burlington Middle and Elementary School selected the name Zuko for the dog. There were three potential names for the dog and Officer Miedico collaborated with Dom Calicchio, School Resource Officer, so the students could choose one of the names.

Once Zuko completes his training, he will be the comfort and search and rescue dog for the department and will not serve in any dangerous capacity.
