Burlington plans court to encourage community fitness

The Parks and Recreation Department of Burlington recently announced that the municipality will be the first in Massachusetts to create what it is calling a ‘community fitness court’, according to an article on Wicked Local Burlington.

The court will be located at the TRW Playground, with Lahey Health as its sponsor. The National Fitness Campaign, a social effort dedicated to creating and maintaining healthy communities throughout the country and the world, is encouraging the creation of these courts. They are circuit training areas that are located in parks and other public spaces, and are free for everyone to use.

Lahey Health's Christine Healey, said Lahey was happy to back the court, which she sees as a positive step for Burlington. She added that it is important for organizations such as Lahey to “promote health and wellness in the community through initiatives like these,” which will help communities remain healthy. Training facilities like this can benefit from clear signage, which operators can create by working with a poster printing company.

The court is planned so that people can complete an entire circuit in seven minutes, featuring full-body exercises. The equipment at the court allows users to increase their strength over time, by using their body weight to counter increasing resistance as they progress. The workouts will be high-intensity, but of short duration.

The new fitness court is scheduled for a Spring 2019 opening.
