There are several events coming up soon at the Burlington Library that will appeal to people of all ages, and who have a wide range of interests.
Chris Rycroft, a professor from Harvard University, promises an intriguing program on how easy it is to understand fractals. An organization called the Fractal Foundation defines a fractal as a “never ending pattern that repeats itself at different scales,” meaning the shape repeats again and again, but in different sizes. Fractals are found in mathematics, but they also appear in nature; the leaves of a tree can be seen as fractals since they're identical, but differently-sized. Dr. Rycroft will discuss how recognizing fractals in the physical world can create wisdom and insight.
The Friends of the Burlington Public Library are sponsoring the fractal presentation, with additional support from the local Burlington Cultural Council, which in turn receives support from the state via the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
Also upcoming is an event at which the library will supply everything participants need to handmake cards for Mother's Day. Organizers of events like this can use poster printing to create a display in the lobby, directing participants to the various locations.
Dr. Rycroft's presentation on fractals is set for 2.00 pm until 3.30 pm this Sunday, May 5. The Mother's Day card event is set for next Wednesday, May 8, from 4:00 pm until 4:45 pm.
