Burlington High School community shows support for favorite custodian

After Ray Harbour, a custodian who has worked at Burlington High School for over 30 years and is well-loved by those at the school, suffered a major heart attack during the winter break, the school undertook a fundraising endeavor for the American Heart Association.

When English teacher Rebecca Bernard learned that February 3 was National Wear Red Day, which encourages the wearing of red to raise awareness of heart disease, she thought this would be an opportunity to donate to a good cause and show the school’s support for its custodian.

The previous week, she and Deborah Deacon, Associate Principal, designed a special T-shirt and ordered 300 of these shirts with Hemlock Inc. based in Somerville, with the hope of raising $1,000 for the American Heart Association. They may also have looked to a poster printing company to create Posters about the T-Shirts and the effort to raise funds.

Last Friday, the shirts could be seen throughout the high school, with the community showing its support for Mr. Harbour.

Many students commented that he not only greets them by name in the hallways every day, but has gone to all of their games and then talks with them about the games the next day, adding that he always has a smile and never turns down the opportunity to give a high five.
