Town Meeting in Burlington has passed a zoning bylaw amendment that will enable a new electric message board to be posted in the Town Common.
The amendment, which received 77 votes in its favor and 14 against, will permit the new sign to be in the area of the sign that already exists at the corner of Cambridge and Bedford Streets on the Town Common.
The new electronic sign will have a sign face that cannot be larger than five feet by nine feet. It will replace the two wooden poles that currently display interchangeable vinyl Signs throughout the year. The sign is not permitted to display any motion graphics or videos, and its entire size cannot be any larger than 12 feet by 16 feet.
Local Print shops can be hired to provide more details about such new signage and its benefits for the town.
Proponents of the new sign say that it will improve communications in town, increase awareness, improve the aesthetic of that corner of Town Common, provide the ability to display and communicate several messages on any given day, and streamline the existing process of sign management by reducing printing costs and staff time. One member of Town Meeting said that the new sign will improve the existing aesthetics at that corner, and will simply look a lot better than it does at the moment.
