The bid (which was submitted by the Castagna Construction Corp. with offices in Londonderry, Newburyport, and Melrose) is $1.6m below the expected bid amount of $8.5m.
The construction project officially kicked off on Tuesday and is expected to last no more than 14 months. The new Fire Station will be constructed on the site of the existing station and is expected to be 15,000 square feet and have three bays. The existing fire station was constructed in 1971 and replacing it has been a top issue for the Burlington community.
The Town Meeting finally approved the plans for the construction of a new fire station two years ago, and the demolishing contractor is applying for the demolition permit.
Town officials were pleased to hear that the winning bid for the on-awaited project was nearly $2,000,000 less than the projected bid amount. Also, John Petrin, the Town Administrator confirmed that the background check performed on the construction company came back clean.
A Burlington firefighter, Selectman Michael Runyan says:
"It is a long time coming, and it is great to be able to move forward with this project."
