Burlington awarded funding to improve pedestrian safety

A Complete Streets Grant from the Highway Division of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation in the amount of $500,000 has been awarded to the Public Works Department in Burlington.

A street designated as a Complete Street is one that enables comfortable, convenient, and safe travel for people of all abilities and ages, regardless of their transportation mode. The funding program encourages the integration of such streets into local planning practices and is designed to teach communities about how they work. Local printing services can assist in education of residents by creating Brochures and other materials with more information about their benefits.

This grant will enable sidewalks to be built, starting at South Bedford Street and turning along Blanchard Road to Muller Road. The project will fill the void between the existing Seven Springs Lake and Van De Graaf Drive bike paths. Also included in the project are street lighting, pedestrian wayfinding, and improvements to crossings.

Melisa Tintocalis, the Economic Development Director of Burlington, said the grant will help with the long-term economic use plan the town has for the area, as it will improve walkability for pedestrians.

If the proceedings go as planned, the design and permitting process will take place this year, with construction to begin next year and be completed by the end of the year.
