Teachers and administrators at the Academy at Penguin Hall are gearing up for the opening of the new school next month. As a private preparatory all-girls school located in Wenham, the school may attract students from nearby Beverly to attend.
The Academy will have less of a traditional educational model by placing the students in settings that are more collaborative in nature. According to the director of curriculum and staff development, Julie Calzini, the approach will be more like that of a college, with four 80-minute classes per day, so that students can explore subjects in greater depth by fully engaging them in the subject matter.
The approach will be more innovative in that students will focus on peer leadership and group projects.
Calzini added that the single-sex classroom encourages personal development in young women, by helping them to get out of their comfort zones. The director of advancement and communication, Dean Tsouvalas, said that young women in a single-sex school are more likely to pursue a career in technology or science.
Although the tuition is $22,000 a year, Tsouvalas may be looking to Print Flyers with more details about the school and asking the community for additional funds for support of the faculty, enhancements to the facilities, athletic opportunities, and support of the school’s endowment.
