Beverly pursues federal grant

The City of Beverly could be a recipient of a community development block grant, which is a grant program of the federal government operated by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development.

If the city is awarded the grant, it could receive $900,000, which it would use for three potential social service programs: renovating low- and moderate-income family housing in the neighborhood of Gloucester Crossing with such projects as replacing windows and doors; fixing HVAC systems, increasing accessibility, and enhancing energy efficiency; and making significant improvements in infrastructure that would include renovating two streets in that neighborhood.

At the public meeting held at the Beverly Public Library, where this grant information was announced, Aaron Clausen, director of planning for Beverly, outlined the details of the grant, Beverly’s probability for being selected, and the accomplishments should the city be selected as a recipient. A “needs score” is used as part of the selection process and Clausen said he felt the city has a good chance of being awarded the grant.

The deadline for the grant application is February 12. The use of Direct Mail printing may be a good way for the city to attract more people to the next hearing so as to get more feedback from the community, as well as possibly some ideas from the public about how the grant could be spent.
