Play from Pulitzer winner comes to Baton Rouge

In May, the Theatre Baton Rouge will present Crumbs From the Table of Joy. This is a play by the Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, Lynn Nottage.

The story follows a recently widowed man named Godfrey Crump and his daughters, Ernestine and Ermina. The family moved to Brooklyn in the 1950s to pursue a better life. To deal with the stress of parenting, Crump turns to religion and conservative values. This pits him against his sister-in-law, who helps Crump raise her nieces. After a heated debate between the two of them, Crump leaves and returns with a new wife, Gerte, who, being a white German immigrant, has her own point-of-view. Between all of them, the atmosphere in the house becomes explosive.

An African American playwright, Nottage specializes primarily in stories about the Black working class. She has won a total of 31 awards and was nominated for 17. Among the ones won were the two Pulitizers she received for her plays Ruined and Sweat. In addition, she was the recipient of a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship as well as several other fellowships, commissions, and residencies.

Crumbs From the Table of Joy will have several performances from May 6 to May 15 at 7155 Florida Boulevard. More information can be found and tickets can be purchased on the Theater Baton Rouge website. Theaters might be interested in poster printing services to help promote the events held at their venue.
