Baton Rouge plans for new bridge

The first meeting of the Capital Area Road and Bridge District was recently held to discuss potential options for a new Baton Rouge bridge that were created by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD).

At the meeting, the DOTD presented plans for a new bridge that would connect LA 30 south of Baton Rouge. It would be a suspension bridge with three lanes in each direction and full shoulders on each side of the set of lanes. This would create four shoulders and six lanes. The shoulders would make it easier for law enforcement to handle accidents and other incidents and prevent the backups that often occur on often bridges.

Printing services can be used to Print more detailed plans of such proposals to that attendees at such meetings can better understand the full ramifications of such projects.

The cost of the bridge alone is expected to be between $700 million and $1 billion with additional costs for the roadwork to connect it to infrastructure that already exists. Only 17 percent of the cost of the bridge would be covered by the DOTD so other source of revenue, like a tax increase, would be needed to cover the cost of the bridge.

One option is that this bridge would eliminate the Plaquemine Ferry so cost of operating the ferry could be used towards construction of the bridge.
