The John R. Little VFW in Southgate and the Democratic County of Campbell County will be placing wreaths on the graves of veterans to celebrate Wreaths Across America this weekend.
Paul Whelan, an attorney from northern Kentucky, is the liaison in the area for this celebration. Wreaths Across America is a project that enables people to remember veterans during the holiday season. More information about such endeavors, costs, and where to make donations are often outlined with flyer printing.
Wreaths will be placed on the Soldier’s Lot of the Veterans Administration at the Evergreen Cemetery, as well as on the Civil War Lot. These two locations hold the graves of over 450 veterans, some of whom are soldiers from the Spanish-American War and Union soldiers from the Civil War, as well as those from both World Wars, Korea, Vietnam, and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Among these veterans are one from the Civil War who was the first police officer killed in the line of duty in Newport in 1884, and two recipients of the Medal of Honor.
The two groups are working hard with many other organizations to get wreaths placed on these graves. So far, about 200 of the graves will be receiving wreaths. The groups are seeking volunteers to place the wreaths and assist in the ceremony.
The wreaths will be laid at 9:00 am on Saturday, December 17.
